Chinese characters were believed to begin as early as the Stone Age (Paleolithic Period). Upon archeological discoveries in various provinces in China, simple pictographic inscriptions on bones and potteries from 8000 to 6000 years ago were found. Yet, in present days, archeologists are still researching the meanings of these inscriptions and their relations to the linguistic symbols that were developed afterwards.
